ECYS Benefit Concert

Yesterday was my orchestra's benefit concert. :) It went pretty well, but in my opinion, during the violin concerto I was really bored even though I was onstage.

Nothing special really happened.... :P

Bible Verse of the Day: Love :)

The three most important things to have are faith, hope and love. But the greatest of them is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13

To LOVE is...
-to want the best for others
-to be happy when others succeed, and to NOT be unhappy when others succeed over you
-to not hold grudges against people, but to forgive
-to protect others and welcome those who are not often loved
-to treat your enemies with love, rather than to revenge
-to be humble; to NOT become jealous of what others have, and to NOT brag about what you have

Fail brownies...

I tried baking brownies yesterday...they didn't turn out so well. :(

When I took the "brownies" out of the oven, the mixture was all bubbly and watery; it was really gross. Then, I checked the instructions again....

I think I was rushing through the instructions too much, because I somehow missed the FLOUR. I mean, when I think back about it, HOW CAN I MISS THE MOST KEY INGREDIENT FOR BAKING?!?!? I don't know...maybe it's because they're called fudge brownies, and the mixture really looked like fudge so I was convinced that everything was going well. :P Sigh...it's ok though. I'll try again sometime later. At least I know now that I probably won't forget the flour again. :)

Certificate of Merit Test

YESSS I'm finally done with the CM Test!!! The CM Test is one of the biggest events I prepare for throughout the year until I actually take it. It takes lots of time to prepare though; you have to do sight reading, technique (scales, arpeggios, etc.), songs, music theory, and ear training. And the theory has, like, a lot of stuff you have to know. But I'm glad I'm done. :)

Weather

The weather has been sooooo weird lately! Some person predicted that there was going to be a pretty big earthquake in the Bay Area yesterday, but it clearly didn't happen. And just around 10 minutes ago, it was raining REALLY hard; then five minutes later, when I looked out the window, it was like, sunny.... Then two minutes ago, it started raining REALLY hard again, and just now, it stopped. OH GREAT, IT'S RAINING AGAAAAIINN!!! Sigh....

Bible Verse of the Day

This is something new I'm going to try out. So every day, I'm going to post a Bible verse, and that will be yours, and my, Bible verse for the day! I hope I'll remember to do this every day though...if not, just make it the Bible Verse of the Week, of the month, of the year...I hope it doesn't get that far though. :P

Genesis 1:1- In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

So if God is the creator of the universe and our world, then he is also the one that gave us everything we have today. So shouldn't we thank Him for that? :)

FAQ's:
Q: If God created everything, then didn't God also create evil?
A: No, God gave humans (Adam and Eve) a choice to do what they wanted. He doesn't force us to do good; if He did, our love for Him wouldn't be really be from the bottom of our hearts. So with choice, us, as humans, chose to do evil.

Q: If God created everything, then who created God in the first place?
A: God was never created, and will never die away. In His world, there is no beginning and no end. But for humans, our minds are too confined into a world of time and space, so it is too much for our little brains to comprehend. :P

If you're further interested in this topic, you should try reading the book, the Case for Faith. The author, Lee Strobel, tells of his journey through his investigation about Christianity. It's really interesting! :D

Today's Church

Today, I went to church (as usual, on Saturday nights). Today, we talked about the book of Romans, and focused on Romans 12.

For some background info:
-The Bible is divided into two parts; the Old Testament and the New Testament. The reason there's a new Testament is because it starts when Jesus (the son of God) was born.
-It is further divided into a bunch of different "books." Some books are really short though; the book of Jonah is only about one side of a page long.
-The books are further divided into separate chapters. So Romans 12 would be chapter 12 of the book of Romans.
-Because the chapters are also quite long sometimes, to make specific parts easier to spot out of quote, the chapters are broken into verses. A verse is usually no longer than 3 sentences.

Anyway, I find it really cool how so much can be learned from every verse, no matter how short or how long it is. Here are some verses that I found the most interesting:

Romans 12:2- ...Let your way of thinking be completely changed. Then you will be able to test what God wants for you. And you will agree that what he wants is right. His plan is good and pleasing and perfect.

Romans 12:3- ...Don't think of yourself more highly than you should. Be reasonable when you think about yourself. Keep in mind the amount of faith God has given you.

Romans 12:5- So also we are many persons. But in Christ we are one body. And each part of the body belongs to all the other parts....

Romans 12:9- Love must be honest and true.... Hold on to what is good.

Romans 12:10- Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves.

Romans 12:14- Bless those who hurt you.

Romans 12:16- ...Be willing to be a friend of people who aren't considered important. Don't think you are better than others.

Romans 12:17- Don't pay back evil with evil....

Romans 12:21- Don't let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

I hope those verses were inspiring to you! There also a lot more cool verses in Romans 12 and in the Bible in general, but there are too many for me to write all of them down. Maybe sometime when you're bored, you can open up a Bible and see what you can learn from it! Or just save some time at the end of each day so you can have a chance to dig deeper into God's word. :D I'm making that my goal from now on...how about you? :)

Underwear Joke

This involves two people....

Person A: Hey, what did you eat under there?
Person B: Under where? (<---sounds like, "underwear")

Did you guys get the joke?! :D

Pants Joke

Why did the pilgrims' pants keep falling off?
(answer is on the bottom)

Answer=Because their belts were on their hats!!! :D

Answer to the joke

The answer to the previous joke was in a really small font on the really bottom.

In case you guys missed it though, the answer=the potato.

I know it doesn't sound funny at all to some people...but this might help make it funnier. (And if you have no idea what I'm talking about right now, just read the previous blog post; it's a joke about a man and a potato.) So, imagine a really sad man fishing by himself in his boat. Then, he feels a tug at the end of the fishing pole. He reels the pole in, and he sees a brown, lumpy, potato! It's really random, and that's why it's so funny. :D

Sorry if you still don't think it's funny at all.... :(

Funny Joke ;)

I have a joke that my friend told me today. It's pretty corny, but I thought it was one of the funniest jokes I've ever heard; I told my mom the joke though and she said it wasn't funny at all...I hope you'll like it anyway!

Once upon a time, a potato and a cucumber were on a ship. The potato was bored, so he started jumping on one side of the boat in attempt to tip it over on one side. The cucumber got annoyed, and said, "If you do that one more time, I'm going to throw you off the ship!" Twenty minutes later, the potato got bored and started jumping again, so the cucumber threw him off the ship.

One day, a fisherman and his wife were sitting in a nice boat, sipping lemonade and enjoying the scenery while fishing for seafood they could eat for dinner. The couple had been together for over 80 years already; they first met in middle school when they were both in 6th grade, and had been together ever since. They were truly a perfect couple! Now they're both already 95 years old. This was their first "date" in twenty-something years, and it was sure to be a memorable experience, and it was. The fisherman had the Alzheimer's disease, and suddenly forgot why he was in this boat and even forgot who the woman sitting next to him was! Totally confused, he said to his wife, "Who the heck are you, and why are you sitting so close to me?!? Go away, you creeper!" Although his wife knew he had such a disease, she was heartbroken; she yelled with all her might, "You can forget anything and everything else in this world, but why ME? We've been together for so long; we're made for each other!" She took her wedding ring off and threw it into the ocean, and jumped into the ocean herself, committing suicide. The fisherman was shocked by her reaction, but still couldn't remember and continued fishing. Just then, he felt just the slightest tug on the end of his fishing pole; it must have been a really small fish, perhaps a baby sardine. He carefully reeled his fishing pole in, and
what did he find?

What do you think he found? Guess!

answer= the potato :)

Help me decide!!! :P

Barely anyone ever reads my blog, but I just felt like asking for your opinion anyway.

I want to get bangs/a haircut in general and highlights, but...
  • I don't know whether or not I should get straight bangs, side bangs, or none if that's best for me.
  • Whether or not I should get highlights - Will people like random strangers on the street think I'm the crazy, doesn't-care-much-about-school kind of teenager if they see me with really bright highlights?
  • What color highlights should I get? I originally wanted blond highlights, but it might be too crazy looking. So maybe a shade of brown?
Thanks so much to whoever responds to this! (Believe it or not, this really means a lot to me; first of all, because I want advice, second of all, because it means you actually read this blog and care about my random life.)

2011 CMEA Solo & Ensemble Festival

Today was the 2011 CMEA (California Music Educators Association or something) Solo & Ensemble Festival hosted by Miller Middle School! I go to Miller, so most Miller band people either perform and/or volunteer for judges' helpers, ratings poster, etc.

But it's cool how at these kinds of events, it's kind of like an unexpected reunion with old friends. I always meet someone I haven't seen for like, FOREVER, and I talk to them again and we're all happy. :) I used to go to CPYO (I might have talked about it in earlier blog posts) and I met this french horn person (Emma) and she was my best french horn buddy!!! Usually, french horn players are guys, so she was my only french horn friend that I was really close with. But then we both quit CPYO after that one season and I didn't see her ever since. :'( But I saw her sister (who plays the oboe) at the festival today and it was really cool! I also helped out as a judge's helper sort of thing (I kept track of the time during performances), and she performed in the room I was helping out at so I listened to her ensemble/trio perform! They were really good! :D I also saw some Lynbrook people but I didn't really talk to them; I just said hi since they were my brother's friends.

Here's a funny story (kind of). To me it's pretty funny. :P So my friend (she plays bassoon) also performed and volunteered at the festival today. At the ratings posters (where they post all the judges' ratings), she saw her really good friend from elementary school and went to say hi and stuff. So my friend was like, "HI RACHEL!!! We haven't seen each other for like, a billion years!!! OMG I missed you!" And the girl (apparently, her name is Rachel), was like, "Wait, who are you?" And my friend was like, "WHAT?!?!? In case you forgot, we were pretty close friends in Garden Gate Elementary for like, 3 years." And she was still like, "I don't remember you...." or something like that. Then, like after 5 minutes of my friend describing to Rachel their past experiences together in elementary school, she finally remembered. It was pretty sad...my friend got kind of upset....

Anyway, my same friend's last name is Josyula, which is pretty uncommon, and she said she sees another person's name on programs and schedules with the exact same last name all the time: this year and last year at the Solo & Ensemble festival, the science fair, her dance recital/competition, and like, all sorts of special events. So she tried to find this person but she never managed to find that person. Wouldn't that be creepy if it happened to you?

Fun Fact (Again)!

Hey, I got another fun fact! :D It's not really fun but it'll make you sound smart/smarter than you are (even though I know a lot people who are very smart already).

Another word for healthy is salubrious....

So next time, instead of saying, "Eat some apples; they are very healthy," try saying, "Eat some apples, they are so salubrious!"

Haha, hope that was interesting...or not. :(

Glasses

I just got glasses yesterday. The good side is that I can see clearer and won't have to miss homework assignments from not being able to see the board; bad because I'll have to wear glasses. I don't have to wear them all day though; my eyes aren't too bad.

Haha, this is a kind-of-funny story, at least for me. So at the store, I picked out these really thin rims that were like, a light metallic purple, but you couldn't really see the color since the rims were thin anyway. I was about to get those, but at the last minute, my dad was like, "Hey, how about those ones!" and pointed to these plastic, black, thick-rimmed ones. I was like (in my head), "Umm, okaaayyy...those are just plain weird" but he seemed to like those ones way better. I tried them on and I told him the ones he picked were more comfortable but the ones I like look better. And he was like, "Well, you should always go for comfort!" but I know he just thought the ones he picked looked better. So I did get the ones he picked. Yesterday, when I picked up the glasses from the shop and showed it to my mom, she was like, "WHAT?!? Those look so old fashioned!" So I blamed it on my dad (haha I'm so mean) and she got kind of upset at my dad. But actually, I like the ones he picked; they're a lot more comfortable. The glasses lady said it's because they're plastic, so they don't feel as hard when people wear them.

Brownies

So these are the brownies Qian Yi and I made at her house last time I came for a sleepover! Cappuccino brownies, actually. At first, after the brownie was done, it looked like a cake! (See the picture to the left; doesn't that look kind of hard like a cake?)

Then, we made fudge frosting on top. It was supposed to be made from white chocolate, but since we didn't have white chocolate, we used regular semi-sweet chocolate. After it dried (after spreading on top), the frosting was all crunchy and stuff. :P It was good though! But it seriously tasted like cake; it looked like cake too.

It was fun making brownies!

ECYS Benefit Concert

I go to a youth orchestra called ECYS (El Camino Youth Symphony). Our annual benefit concert is coming up soon, and we're featuring a very prestigious and special person who's soloing for us the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. He's the concertmaster from the Philadelphia Orchestra, David Kim. So you guys should come to watch; it's going to be exciting!

Here are the songs we're playing (in no particular order):
Stravinsky, the Firebird Suite
Berlioz, the Roman Carnival
Tchaikovsky, Violin Concerto

It is on (Saturday) March 26, 7:30 pm at the Flint Center.

For those who want to go, if you want to order tickets, contact me so I can order them for you. However, since this is a benefit concert, the tickets won't be free like they usually are. Adults/general admission will be $35, and student and/or senior admission will be $25. I know it's kind of expensive (people can do lots and buy lots of other stuff with this amount of money) but it's a great experience to see if you're interested in joining a band or orchestra, to watch such a highly honored violinist (David Kim) and to support the ECYS people (members and staff) for the hard work we put in to get these pieces together. I hope you guys are interested!

Just a reminder: If you want tickets, email me (janekirstenlee@yahoo.com) and I'll get some to you! :D

THANKS!
